The Brother HL-3170CDW offers much more for the small step-up in price. Much like the HL-3140CW, it provides fast speed, a paper input capacity well suited for a typical micro or small place of work, and Wi-Fi Direct for easy producing directly from touch scre en phones and tablets.
Brother HL-3170CDW rates your printer at 23 pages per minute (ppm), which is a bit faster as opposed to rating for your HL-3140CW. In each cases, the rated speed is what you should see when stamping text documents or perhaps other files that want little to zero processing. On our own tests, however, there wasn't high of a difference.
Output quality would be the one area that drags down Brother HL-3170CDW overall score, with par quality graphics, but sub-par wording and photos. The good thing for the wording quality is that though it's well under par, it's still superior to the worst wording I've seen published by color lasers and also LEDs, and even your worst isn't everything that bad. Unless you might need a printer with text ideal for high-quality desktop publishing or you've an unusual desire for small fonts, you shouldn't have a problem with the text.
